Good afternoon Frost MS Community,

As the holiday season approaches, I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for making Frost MS a vibrant and supportive place to learn and grow. This time of year is an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments, celebrate our shared experiences, and look forward to the exciting possibilities the new year will bring.

Our students’ enthusiasm and perseverance, the unwavering dedication of our staff, and the ongoing support of our families make this school an extraordinary community. Together, we continue to strive for excellence, and I am proud the work we’ve accomplished already and excited to see what is to come!

The winter holiday break is a time to rest, recharge, and reconnect with loved ones. Whether you’re traveling, celebrating traditions, or simply enjoying quiet moments at home, I hope this season brings you joy, peace, and a sense of renewal.

Please remember that school will be closed from December 21, 2024 to January 5, 2025. Classes will resume on January 6, 2025 and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the next chapter of our journey together.

Thank you for being an essential part of our school community. Wishing you a holiday season filled with warmth, happiness, and cherished memories.

Warm regards,

Anthony Harris

Improving attendance is a major goal of Frost MS!  Attendance and punctuality are critical to student success in the classroom, and absences add up over the course of the year.  Being present in school for all classes is of utmost importance, unless the student is sick or out for another excused reason.  Missed days, including excused absences, and late arrival can lead to stress on students who must make up the coursework on their own. Please seek to avoid vacations during school days when possible. Time is set aside during the school year for travel including winter break, spring break, and several student holidays scattered throughout the year.

If your student is going to be absent, please notify us by 8:00am at one of these:

Calendar: The Frost MS bell schedule and A/B day calendar can be found at this link on the school website.

Transportation: If your child will be using school transportation, please ensure that you have reviewed the bus route and schedule. We strongly encourage students to ride the bus as it significantly eliminates traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. Tardiness because of traffic will not be excused. Bus schedules available through your SIS ParentVue account where you can see your transportation assignments.  Please contact Area 2 Transportation with transportation questions at [email protected] or 703-764-2050.

Communication: We believe in open and effective communication between school and families. Our school website and communication platforms will provide you with regular updates, important announcements, and opportunities to engage with your child's education.

Fair CIty Mall:  We strongly recommend that students do not go over to Fair City Mall after school. Students rarely make the best choices and oftentimes find themselves in situations that they’d rather not be in.  Parents, please talk to your child about this at home and reiterate that often. We encourage you to have your child ride the bus home or you pick them up in the PM Kiss and Ride line.

Greetings Frost MS Community,

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Richard Deixler as the newest member of the Frost MS administrative team! In 2024 Mr. Deixler began his 17th year in Fairfax County Public Schools, and 6th year as Assistant Principal at Mantua Elementary School.  He started his career in education as a fifth-grade teacher at Haycock Elementary, where he taught for 5 years.  He has worked at Mantua since, for 5 years as a fifth-grade teacher, one year as an Administration Intern, and for the last six as an Assistant Principal.

Mr. Deixler is a proven leader with years of experience providing professional development for instructional staff, operational staff, and school administrators. Mr. Deixler has provided differentiated professional development from needs and goals identified as part of the School Improvement and Innovation Planning process to include Multi-tiered Systems of Support and Reading and Math Workshop. He has built staff capacity in instructional practices by facilitating data dialogues for teachers, teams, and the Guiding Coalition to develop tier 2 and 3 interventions to support identified students in closing achievement gaps.  In addition, he is skilled in building a positive workplace culture, promoting collaboration, and increasing efficacy and effectiveness in all staff members. Mr. Deixler was also selected as a member of the Region 5 Assistant Principal Planning Committee and the Region 5 AP Plus Planning Committee.

Mr. Deixler is originally from upstate New York and received his undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo in English.  After trying out life in the business sector, Mr. Deixler realized his passion for education, returning to school for his Master’s in Elementary Education at Florida State University.  After years of teaching, he obtained his Master’s in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia.

In 2019, Mr. Deixler married the love of his life Leah; their son, Ari, was born in August 2020.   Mr. Deixler enjoys spending time with his amazing family, golfing, cooking, movies, reading, and rooting hopelessly for his New York sports teams.  Mr. Deixler is so excited to join the Frost community and contributing to our great school!

Mr. Deixler will start with us on January 6, 2025!  Again, welcome our newest Frost Falcon, Mr. Richard Deixler!

All the best,

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

Frost MS Meditation and Silent Reflection Space

In alignment with FCPS regulations and expectations, Frost MS ensures that students and staff of all religious backgrounds have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school building. The following are our guidelines as of 9/13/23. Students whose religious beliefs require them to pray at a specific time that coincides with instructional time can be accommodated with parental written permission submitted to the school principal.

Parent Permission for Use of Meditation and Silent Reflection Space

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Attendance: School starts at 7:30 AM and ends at 2:15 PM.

Families We Need Your Help!

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides students with internet access and technology resources to support their learning.  With this access comes the responsibility to use these tools ethically and appropriately.

Students are expected to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in the Student Rights & Responsibilities, which outlines guidelines for responsible technology use. This includes respecting the privacy and work of others, using technology for educational purposes, and following established rules for safety and security.

We have recently observed an increase in students using apps for inappropriate communication and accessing non-educational content during the school day. We ask for your partnership in reinforcing the AUP at home. Please remind your children to use their devices for school-related activities and content only.

To help you monitor your child's device usage during the school day, you have access to Lightspeed Reports. These reports provide insights into your child's online activity while at school.  We encourage you to review these reports regularly and discuss appropriate online behavior with your child. In partnership, we can ensure that our students are using technology responsibly and safely.

If your student lost their charger, you can purchase one in My School Bucks for $23.

1st Quarter Snapshot Grade Progress Report

Progress reports for the 1st quarter will be delivered to students during 8th period today, November 8th.

Attendance Reports

Attendance is a critical component of your student's growth and success. Our goal is to partner with families to ensure students are on-time, present, and ready to learn. Did you know that chronic absenteeism (CA) is defined by FCPS as missing 10 percent or more of the academic year for any reason (excused absences, prearranged absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions)? Based on a 180-day school year, this equates to 18 days per year or 2 to 3 days per month. Absenteeism can limit learning, create social anxiety, and be a barrier to achievement.

We will be sending out quarterly attendance reports to all Frost families.  You can expect the first quarter report to be sent by early next week.  If you do not receive a report, please contact Susan Morningstar at [email protected].

Student attendance can viewed at anytime in ParentVUE.

Fall Picture Day Pictures

Pictures were distributed in your students' PE classes this week.  You can order more pictures online by using the Portrait ID and Access Code found in the picture package.  If you misplace that, please contact Lifetouch at 1-800-736-4753.

And Save the Date!

Makeup picture day is Friday, December 6th.

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

Important Tech Update

We want to emphasize the importance of students keeping their Chromebook cases on at all times. These cases are designed to protect the devices from accidental drops, scratches, and other damage.

If a Chromebook is damaged due to a lack of a case, students may be held responsible for the repair or replacement costs. We understand that accidents happen, but by ensuring students keep their cases on, we can help prevent unnecessary damage and the associated costs.

If your student lost their charger, you can purchase one in My School Bucks for $23.

Attendance: School starts at 7:30 AM and ends at 2:15 PM.

Join the PTA Today!

Thank you to many who joined and others who stepped up to volunteer. As we embark on another exciting school year, we invite you to make a difference for our students and teachers at Frost Middle School through Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) membership.

PTA Family Memberships are $25. Funds from PTA memberships and donations are used in support of the Frost PTA’ initiatives including our staff Grant Program. Your dollars will go directly to programs that enrich the experience of students, families, and staff here at Frost. A family membership also includes access to the Frost online student directory. Every parent/guardian who signs up for PTA membership automatically gets included in the student directory, unless you choose to opt your student out.

You can purchase your PTA membership here. Additional donations are also welcome to support the important work we do for our teachers and students!
